Ay Ayeng is based on the story of “Maestra Ester.” The story is by Bbdo Noviza with the screenplay written by Lica Lazaro and Ed Palmos.

Ayeng (Heart Evangelista), an aspiring teacher, is forced to stop her studies when the village supporting her becomes victims of military rule. To her surprise military barracks are set up around her village. Ayeng hears word from Umay (Marie Isabel Lopez) that Saddek (Jao Mapa), Ayeng’s childhood boyfriend, is a victim of this military rule and has little assurance that he is still alive. Ayeng, with her limited knowledge of education, tries to help the kids in the village learn how to read and count. To teach them she uses flowers, green leaves, dried sticks, and the dry soil which serves as her blackboard under the shade of trees. The military men find her teachings detrimental to their cause and work to stop her.

Ayeng’s hardships are witnessed and documented by her childhood friend Karen (Sheena Joy), a photojournalist who left the village many years ago. The presence of Ayeng and Karen makes the soldiers uneasy and conflict arises. Sgt. Gallo (John Arcillia) takes action in order to keep the fear the military has generated among the villagers alive.

This is an inspiring story of two friends, Ayeng and Karen reaching their dreams.
